The NASW Code of Ethics makes a number of statements about social workers’ responsibility to study, use, and engage in research and evaluation. In the past, many social workers had difficulty thinking of themselves as knowledgeable and capable in research, despite completing the required research course in school. Think of yourself as a part of a new breed of social workers. You are completing your education at a point in time that places great emphasis on both research and evaluation. You also have greater access to published research than ever before. Research knowledge and skills are like muscles—if you do not use them, they will atrophy. You have an ethical obligation as a social worker to exercise and flex your research muscle. Consider how the NASW Code of Ethics guides your professional research.

In this course there are various skills that has assisted me in and therefore I feel confident that I will be able to apply some of these skills in my role as a social worker and in my future career choice in this field. I enjoyed the research in the latter weeks regarding stakeholders and the roles they play in various agencies or programs. I am better knowledgeable about what skateholders do now, not also enjoyed. Outputs and outcomes was something of interest as well and is important in research and making decisions. Most importantly evaluation is a vital element of any social work approach and is critical for ensuring that social work does work (Dudley, 2020). It is important to remember a program and it’s practice interventions do not exist or operate in a vacuum. They are part of a larger dynamic system of many forces and factors, which includes a wide range of policies, administrative leadership styles, staff an administrative communication patterns, varied perceptions of clients, and financial issues, all of which theoretically need to be taken into consideration when conducting a program evaluation (Dudley et al, 2020). Ethical issues would be something to consider as well. When addressing political issues the way should be ethically based, and any decisions made should be partially based on an ehtical code such as NASW Code of Ethics or ethical prinicples of the AEA. Social workers are aware that when participating in research and evaluation our obligation is to follow an ethical code, and it obligates the evaluator to be well informed about any ethical issues and well versed in how to implement a variety of measures intended to prevent ethical problems from occuring (Dudley et al, 2020). Therefore the skills I think would be most applicable to achieve my future goals in this field is first to always remain profession, establish and keep a good rapport with your clients and colleagues and last good communication both verbal and non verbal. The ability to effectively communicate clearly with a various people is vital. There as a social worker my primary mission is to advocate for my clients, and to do so I must understand my client and my clients needs.

Since the beginning of this course, emphasis is placed on connecting research to practice, research providing information on evidenced based practice, and more recently evaluating those EBP-programs. Learning the resources available and becoming more familiar with navigating the sites has been a useful skill to develop and to employ in practice. Especially for those of us who hope to establish our own individual practices in the future. Sometimes for me and others the difficult part is the starting point, the organization of ideas, and specifically getting to point of implementation. I have referred to the road map to implementing evidenced-based program and SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental health Service Administration) their website has been greatly underused by me as a social worker until this course.

The knowledge regarding evaluation reinforced the quality control and performance improvement process conducted by most companies I have been employed through. In practice, in long term care, process evaluations are often called upon to be conducted at a minimum quarterly for social workers in long term care. We often are responsible for the grievance and complaints issued by residents in nursing facilities. Process evaluations include answering the questions of how compliant the facility is with follow up and how compliant they are in following their own policies, including investigations. The process evaluations also identify deficient practices and areas for improvement. Informants tend to be the department heads, though a better and more insightful approach would come from line staff.

As for use of research going forward, as noted by NASW social workers bear a responsibility to add to the conversation and be a part of research in establishing and reaffirming evidenced based practice. This keeps practice efforts most current and up to date. Though diversity and culture, socioeconomic status, will cause for adaptations to program. Law and Shek (2011) notes program fidelity should be encouraged especially when vigorous trial runs show repeated success rates. Learning the steps it takes to stay true to the program and studies conducted across cultures can help in social work practice. As noted with the road map to implementation it begins with reading up on the knowledge base available and finding what works best with our targeted population.
