ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and Reasonable Accommodations
The objective of this discussion is to reflect on how organizations make accommodations for people with disabilities and are ADA-compliant.
Before beginning your assignment, review the following article:
Then—before you start write out your initial post—do the following exercise:
- Write a disability on a separate sheet of paper. You can use anything as an example: a visible disability (immobility, for example) or an invisible disability (such as Asperger’s).
- Next, write out everything that comes to mind regarding stereotypes for this disability. If you can, try to also include some idea of how you came to know the stereotype(s).
- Then, come up with some activities you have experienced at your job (past, present, imagined) such as a general workshop of any kind, company picnic, or even something casually organized like getting together for a social event after work.
- Once you have this organized, you’ll proceed to the discussion board for the next part of the assignment.
Once a couple of your colleagues have put up their initial posts, you are going to review their posts and come up with reasonable accommodations for the disabilities listed in your Discussion Board post using their activities. This is tricky, and will require a lot of interaction with one another. You will likely have to ask people several questions and you might have to do a little research on the ADA site to help you with ideas.
Overall, your task is to come up with reasonable accommodations for a person with that disability to attend that organization’s activity or event. For example, if the activity is to attend a football game and the assigned disability is blindness, then the group needs to determine how they would accommodate a blind person attending a football game.
Provide a thoughtful post of 2-3 paragraphs, citing 1-2 scholarly sources. Remember to encourage discussion, proofread, and demonstrate your understanding of the material by citing properly.
