HEA 310 HEALTH AND AGING This assignment is based on your observations of attitudes, behaviors, beliefs, environment and media. How do living arrangements affect the aging, environmental press? What impact do finances have on the aging? What role do gender, race and ethnicity play in these situations if any? You are to include five (5) of the different situations listed below and reflect on how the older people in these situations cope. List of acceptable situations: Grocery store Park Place of worship Gym School Restaurant Clothing store Medical setting-clinic, hospital Work Include the questions below in your discussion. Are they (the older people) easily accepted? Who is with them if anyone? What is their level of fitness? Do they need devices to make them more independent? How do others react to them and/or treat them based on their perceived age? What is going on in that situation? If you were that person how might you feel? What stereotypes do you notice? Please comment about how you would help them if they were your client/patient. Please write a 7-8 page (1,250 – 2,000 word) paper that incorporates the entirety of the course material through your observations. Begin the paper with your thoughts about course material and how you plan to incorporate it into your observations. Next write approximately one page (250 words) for each observation that includes the above questions where appropriate. Feel free to make up your own questions when the above questions do not apply. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Describe aging as a developmental process determined by biology, behavioral choices, social roles and opportunities, and cultural values. 2) Identify common myths and stereotypes about aging, mid-life and older adults, and the impact of ageism upon the aging process. 3) Identify normal biological changes of aging and their implications for disease risk, environmental and psychological adaptation. 4) Use gerontological concepts to describe psychosocial adaptation of the aging process. 5) Think critically about social and economic factors that contribute to wellness in mid and later life. 6) Demonstrate heightened awareness of one’s own background and experiences as it relates to aging and demonstrate increased sensitivity toward older people.
