Reading and analyzing the chronicle of human folly between 1914 and 1945 is depressing.
But does it surprise that the USA and USSR were able at least to avoid another major between 1945 and 1991?
While the Cold War did have its moments, especially during Cuban Missile Crisis, when the world seemed on the brink of annihilation, why were both sides able to pull back?
Did not both capitalism and communism rest on shared assumptions about the value of human rationality and the scientific method? Is that not why the two systems could engages in a “peaceful co-existence”?
Could this sort of tense, but largely rational, sort of global competition reemerge today or in the future?
