Paper Guidelines In this course we talk about how psychopathology is portrayed in our society and how this affects the lives of those with mental illnesses. Because most people don’t have expertise in abnormal psychology, public perceptions about psychopathology are strongly influenced by the media, including popular movies and television. Information presented in the media can be sympathetic and enlightening, or can perpetuate the stigma often associated with mental illness. This stigma limits opportunities for individuals with mental illnesses and often prevents them from seeking appropriate help. For this assignment, you will critically evaluate the accuracy of information recently presented in the movies or on TV on some form of psychopathology, and discuss how this presentation might influence public opinion. “Abnormal Psychology in the Movies and on TV” One of the most visible places to find examples of abnormal psychology is in movies or on TV. This assignment will involve watching a popular film or TV show that depicts some form of psychopathology. In your paper, you will provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the character with the disorder, and discuss his/her symptoms, treatment, and as the mental health profession in general. Finally, you will be asked to discuss the film’s characterization in light of the current understanding of this disorder. Paper Guidelines” Choose a recent movie or television show that has a character with a mental illness Introductory Paragraph: Introduce the movie and character you will be presenting Brief description of movie and character (1 paragraph max) Identify the primary diagnosis Provide an overview of the disorder including age of onset, course, prevalence etc.. and any research that talk about the etiology (the origins) and/or the treatment of the disorder. This part of the paper should be approximately 2 pages double spaced and should be in APA style. Please use a minimum three peer reviewed references (which should be cited in APA style). Peer reviewed references are generally journal articles that can be accessed from Psycho Info. I will post details on how to do an article search. List symptoms for primary diagnosis using DSM 5 criteria and explain what character did (i.e. behavior) to qualify to have those symptoms Discuss portrayal of disorder in movie. Was it realistic? What was not realistic? Was anything mentioned about treatment? If so, what? Conclusion References (minimum 3) in APA style Paper should be 6-8 pages in length double spaced. Was anything mentioned about treatment? If so, what? Conclusion References (3 minimum) in APA style Paper should be 6-8 pages double spaced in length. So Basically what I would like would be for you to start the paper with a paragraph introducing the movie or TV you chose, the character that you will be discussing and the mental illness that was portrayed in the movie. The next two pages will provide an overview of the disorder using APA style. This will include the course, prevalence, onset etc.. I would also like you to discuss the etiology (where the disorder came from) and some research on treatment options. You should use a minimum of three references (generally peer reviewed journal articles). These can be found in PSYCHINFO in the database section of the library. I will provide a link to the APA style-guide. The references must be cited appropriately both in text and on the reference page. In the next paragraph describe the primary diagnosis including the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for this disorder. For example, in movie X, the major character Y had a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder. In order to receive a diagnosis of major depressive disorder an individual must have five of the following symptoms present for at least 2 weeks and that interests with social and occupational functioning: – depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report (e.g., feels sad or empty) or observation made by others (e.g., appears tearful). (In children and adolescents, this may be characterized as an irritable mood.) • markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day • significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain (e.g., a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month), or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day. • insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day • psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day • fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day • feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day • diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day • recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide. Next state which of the diagnostic criteria were evidence in the movie – For example, in the beginning of the movie you see that the main character tries to make herself something to eat but reports that she is not hungry and she hasn’t had an appetite for several weeks. In addition, her mother comments on the fact that she has lost a lot of weight. This corresponds with the weight loss symptom of depression….. Then discuss whether the movie portrayed the illness in a realistic way (for example – if the movie was a comedy – it is often not a realistic portrayal of a disorder) and explain why or why not. Afterward discuss if treatment was portrayed (did the character see a psychologist, doctor, psychiatrist? – did they take medicine etc…) Then conclude the paper. At the end of the paper there should be a separate page of references using APA style. Here is an example: References Kendler, K.S., Prescott, C.A., Myers, J., & Neale, M.C. (2003). The structure of genetic and environmental risk factors for common psychiatric and substance use disorders in men and women. Archives of General Psychiatry, 60, 929-937. Kessler, R.C., Wai, T.C., Demler, O., Merikangas, K.R., & Walters, E.E. (2005). Prevalence, severity, and comorbidity of 12-Month DSM-IV disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Archives of General Psychiatry, 62, 617-627. Moffitt, T.E., Caspi, A., & Rutter, M. (2006). Measured gene-environment interactions in psychopathology: Concepts, research strategies, and implications for research, intervention, and public understanding of genetics.
